In celebration of CoastLines: American Prints and Drawings, the Clark presents a selection of films about the complex relationship between the ocean and the land.

The series continues with Moana. This charming, animated movie about a teen Polynesian girl fighting to save her Pacific island’s future initially feels like standard Disney fare. But this tale also feels like something new. Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) is set to take over from her father as the leader of an island community. When the plants on Moana’s island start to wither, the ocean chooses this sixteen-year-old to set sail in search of muscled demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson, self-mockingly funny). There’s not a potential husband in sight; Moana’s future is entirely defined by her leadership and ability to fend off the mansplaining know-it-all Maui. As messages go, we’ll take them. (Run time: 1 hour, 47 minutes)

Bring a picnic and your own seating. This film is shown outdoors at dusk. Rain moves the event to the Manton Research Center auditorium.
